What Is An SUV?

Every year, the number of SUVs being purchased is increasing more than any other type of vehicle, but not many people know what exactly is an SUV.

The initials SUV stands for “sport utility vehicle,” but there is much more to the vehicle than it says. The typical first impression people get from an SUV is that it is a rugged, big vehicle fitted and sturdy with four-wheel drive, geared up for on and off-road adventures. SUVs also have a spacious interior, large boot, and were built for a tough life.

An SUV is typically the vehicle choice for families and adventure seekers. If you have a knack for adventure, you can easily put a surfboard in the back of your SUV and reach deserted beaches, store skies to ski to isolate slopes, or transport sheepdogs across the steep fields to recover any lost herd.

In recent times, SUV has turned into one of the most important inventory items for many manufacturers. There is no denying that the vehicle is known for its highly versatile application. According to a recent study, SUVs were among the top  10 vehicles sold in the year  2019.

What Makes a Great SUV?

There are three key ingredients of a great SUV: better performance on uneven roads or icy weather, high driving position, and spacious interior. Families mostly prefer SUVs as it allows for a better driving view for the road ahead, more protection in a wreck, and better capability of navigating rough terrain.

The SUV has exceptional interior space also, whether you’re a sports enthusiast or farmer that needs transportation of bales of hay. All in all, a traditional SUV should have enough room. Finally, an SUV generally built with mechanical parts designed to bear the rugged surfaces, given a few exceptions. There is a big difference between a crossover and an SUV.

Is Crossover an SUV?

After saying that there are technical differences between SUVs and crossovers, there are still people that use the two terms synonymously, but here’s the contradiction: both terms are used by car manufacturers to describe taller cars with a higher driving position and chunky, off-road looks.

For instance, Audi SUV is relatively smaller than an Audi A3 hatchback with a few similarities in the parts, which eventually makes it a crossover. If you are unsure about what you should go for, visit 500 Below Cars to get a FREE consultation and talk to one of our experts.

How Popular is SUV?

Recent findings showed that SUVs account for nearly 40% of the world passenger car market in the year 2017. In 2019, the sales of SUV went up 3%. Over a million those SUVs were mostly new SUVs or light pickup trucks.

In the United States and many other countries,  SUV is classified as a light truck sports utility vehicle. This gives the SUV much more relaxed fuel efficiency. In terms of how the SUV looks and feels, it seems like a combination of a minivan, truck, or an average American family car. SUV was first built on the truck chassis before switching to more of a unibody body, chassis and floor were on the single structure. In today’s modern SUVs, have four to five doors to accommodate families while historically, off-roaders had two doors only. Let’s learn more about the types of SUVs.

Sizes of SUVs

There are mainly three SUV sizes in general: small, medium, and full size.

Small Size SUVs

An easy example of a small-sized SUV is the Hyundai Tucson and the Nissan Rogue. Due to its size, the vehicle is easy to park and maneuver and serves more like a compact crossover. There is another example, Mazda CX-5, which is more sporty than the rest as it is more responsive in steering and handling.

Mid-Size SUVs

Some of the mid-size SUVs are crossovers as they share a similar shape and performance as the passenger cars while the other ones seem more like pickup trucks. One of the most popular choices for mid-size SUVs is the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander. The reason for their popularity is mainly due to its excellent storage capacity, quiet interior, and smooth driving experience.

Full-Size SUV

A full-size SUV like the 2020 Cadillac Escalade or 2019, GMC Yukon, are two of the most luxurious SUVs in the market owned mostly by celebrities. These full-size vehicles have exceptional offroad capabilities. These large size vehicles include extended-length body to provide extra space for cargo and the passengers.

The Evolution of SUVs

Between and during the time of World War II, SUV prototypes began to appear. The first examples were large and fitted with four-wheel drives, had large interiors, and built for navigating tough terrains. 1974 Jeep Cherokee was the first car to be called an SUV, mainly for their convenience, comfort, and luxury as a passenger car.

SUV soon became a ride that was considered as a mainstream symbol of a high-end luxury car that has every quality to deliver an exceptional driving experience. Given their prices, SUVs never fail to deliver the value people are often looking for.

Bottom Line

Over the last 10 years or so, SUV has become a more family-friendly choice than a luxury ride. It is comfortable, sporty, and stylish in every way. The growth in sales has been profound in the last couple of years, and the trend continues to move in the right direction. It is a practical ride that suits almost every style.
